There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat casino, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that features numerous luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
